Sports Illustrated has published its 2017 MLB Ballpark Food Safety Rankings and Fenway Park ranked second in cleanest concession stands.

The park earned 30 violations in total, but only two of those were critical food code violations for a broken dishwasher and a dirty ice machine. However, the inspections took place before the season started so the concession stands weren’t serving food then.

The No. 1 spot on the list went to the home of the Mariners, Safeco Field, with five total food violations and one critical food violation.

The Tampa Rays’ Tropicana Field was at the very bottom of the list with 105 critical violations and 241 total violations. The critical violations at Tropicana included black mold and live insects.

It underscores the notion that the Rays, as currently situated, do not really seem like a viable big-league franchise. So does this: In every season since the Lightning's 2011-12 campaign, Tampa Bay's NHL team has drawn a higher average attendance than the Rays did in the baseball season that followed.

That just doesn't happen. It's a testament to the Lightning, a perennially winning team that sells out every night, for one thing. And it's not a knock on hockey, it's that baseball plays its games in much larger stadiums and during the summer, when kids and teachers are off from school and lots of people are looking for pleasant ways to get out of the house and spend time outdoors or save money on air conditioning.

But in none of the other markets with NHL and MLB teams is this even remotely close to the case, unless you ignore the existence of the Chicago Cubs entirely and point out that the Blackhawks sometimes draw better than the White Sox. The Tigers were the worst team in baseball last year and still handily outdrew the Red Wings. The Blue Jays play in actual Canada and sold almost exactly twice as many tickets to home games in 2017 as the Maple Leafs did in 2016-17. The Yankees pull as many fans as the Rangers and Islanders combined.

And the Rays haven't even been bad! They saw a little spike in popularity when they first got good in 2008 and climbed into the middle of the league's lowest third in attendance, but fell to the bottom in 2012 - their third straight 90-win season - and have remained there since, with the gap between theirs and the next lowest attendance growing.

Bring Back the 'Spos.

Miami (Capacity 37,442)
32,151 (Opening Day)
12,034 (N)
13,422 (N)
10,428 (Sunday)
11,113 (N)
14,953 (N)

Tampa Bay (Capacity 42,735)
31,042 (Opening Day)
19,203 (N)
17,838 (N)
14,256 (Sunday)

:forza:
